Abortion is a real problem in the U.S., one that doesn't get a lot of press, for example the tens of thousands of people that go to Washington D.C. every year to participate in the Pro-Life Walk, that don’t get any press whatsoever. No news channels cover them, no newspaper articles are written about them, it’s almost a taboo subject. However it’s a taboo subject that is splitting the nation in two. As James Q. Wilson writes in his article How Divided Are We? “America is indeed a polarized nation, perhaps more so today than at any time in living memory” The great split in our nation that occurred before living memory is the issue of slavery, abortion has almost split the nation as much as slavery did in the mid 1800’s.

The great minds of the U.S. must wake up and see this problem that has been facing our nation for the past 40 years. A solution must be found to keep the peace, compromise may be necessary which is hard to believe since the man at the top of the government is terrible at compromise and has done an ok job without it. An ok solution can’t happen, the compromises leading up to the civil war were ok solutions and how did they work out? This answer must appease both sides until the public opinion has changed and a true decision can be made.

If the issue of slavery isn’t resolved and the public opinion isn’t changed for the right, then the United States may head down the same path it took in the 1800’s, a path that included activism for slaves, compromises, violence, and finally a civil war. This contention in our nation must be resolved before violence, like the violence committed in Kansas by northerners against southerners and vice versa. This solution however is unclear, no answer has been brought to the table that could correctly meet all the complicated needs of both sides of this argument, the pro-life supporters and the pro-choice supporters. If abortion is declared illegal (which it should be) then pro-choice supporters will have marches and protests that eventually escalates into violence committed by radical pro-choice supporters. However if abortion is allowed to continue unchecked then the radical pro-life supporters will eventually do the same. The only true option as I see it is to make the right choice and deal with whatever radicals choose to commit violence. This means abolishing abortion and dealing with pro-choice violence that may or may not come farther down the road.

  1. Christian, I applaud your conviction and your willingness to weigh-in on such a controversial topic. Admittedly, it appears that we are going to be a safe group this year. This is really the only post I have read that might generate some pointed dialogue. Unfortunately, there are several problems with this post that are going to prevent you from getting the attention you deserve.

First, the writing is very sloppy. Just about all of your sentences are run-on sentences, and some of them do not make sense. What does the first sentence of your third paragraph mean? You write, "If the issue of slavery isn't resolved..." then we might head down a path towards war. The issue of slavery wasn't resolved, and this led to war. I am confused by your logic here. What am I missing?

I also question the overall logic of your response. What evidence is there to suggest that abortion is the new slavery? This is probably the most interesting part of your thinking, but this requires quite a bit of evidence. Personally, I would place the controversy surrounding gun control, or gun rights, as a more divisive issue in our country than abortion. I could definitely be wrong. If you believe that abortion is the most divisive issue in our country, one that could lead to another Civil War, then you need to at least offer some evidence to back that up.

Finally, I am not sure that your solution about outlawing abortion and dealing with pro-choice violence really meets the "compromise" that you propose earlier in your post.

I am really excited that you have conviction and courage. This makes for great online journal posts. However, you need to be sure that your presentation is solid.
